Bringing together the works of 30 contemporary Indigenous artists, Defying Empire commemorates the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Referendum that recognised Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as Australians for the first time.
The exhibition explores the ongoing resilience of Australia’s Indigenous people since first contact, through to the historical fight for recognition and ongoing activism in the present day.

Entrance to the Australian National Maritime Museum is via ramp access at the main entrance. There is lift or ramp access to all exhibition spaces within the main building, and to the viewing platform outside the Museum.
Two dedicated accessible parking spaces are located outside the main entry to the Museum. It is recommended that visitors pre-book parking, please call the venue to book.
The Maritime Museum has courtesy wheelchairs available on site to loan. Pre-booking a wheelchair is essential. Please call the venue to arrange a booking.

Hearing loops are available in main ticket areas.
Important InfoFace masks are mandatory at all Sydney Festival events for all patrons 13 years and older, in line with NSW Government regulations. A face mask is required at all times while inside foyers, theatres and outdoor venues, including during performances. Children 12 and under are exempt but are encouraged to wear masks where practicable.
