The Headland at Barangaroo Reserve is an all-weather venue and Sydney Festival is committed to going ahead with performances come rain or shine. Please come prepared. Venue seatmap -->

Returning for a third year and cementing a new tradition of cleansing and consideration, The Vigil returns to Barangaroo Reserve, offering an opportunity to gather together and experience a night of performance and reflection on the eve of Australia Day.

It’s a time to consider Australia’s Indigenous heritage, as well as its colonial institutions and contemporary multicultural migration, from dusk on 25 January until dawn on 26 January.

The Vigil is a free event, however to aid COVID safety it is now ticketed and all attendees will be required to book a ticket in advance. Register your interest to be notified when tickets are released in January.

NITV will be broadcasting coverage of The Vigil again this year, which will also be streaming via Facebook.

Hosted by TV Personality Karla Grant, we open The Vigil with a traditional Smoking & Welcome To Country ceremony. Performances by Matthew Doyle, Emma Donovan, Buudja Buudja Butterfly Dance, Luke Currie-Richardson, Jannawi Dance Clan and a special performance by Bangarra Dance Theatre. Co-directed by NRL great Dean Widders and Bangarra’s Artistic Director Stephen Page, the performance will bring together men from the worlds of sport, the arts, politics, business and academia, to celebrate the strength of our warriors and the responsibility men have for their families and communities.
