THE WALKLEY FOUNDATION FOR EXCELLENCE IN JOURNALISM

Host: Jan Fran

Mahmood Fazal is the 2020 Media Diversity Award winner for his Audible Original podcast "No Gangsters in Paradise", a deep look into the Darwiche-Razzak family conflict in the early 2000s — a war between rival gangs in Western Sydney that fuelled the media stereotype of “Middle Eastern gang violence”.

As a former member of a criminal motorcycle gang, Fazal is now a writer and reporter focusing on crime and racialised reporting on young Middle Eastern men and the Islamic community.

Walkeys Live: The Journalist Gene is a series of eight one-hour biographical portraits of eight Walkley Award-winning or recognised journalists, exploring the national and international context in which their award-winning work took place; the influences and personal inspirations for their approach; and the professional drive, courage and values that sustain their work.
